Located in the Foothills of beautiful Western North Carolina and a short drive from Penland School of Crafts and the city of Asheville with its vibrant craft focus, lies the campus of J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center and a very unique program called South Mountain Crafts. This program creates fine renditions of pottery, weaving, furniture, baskets, toiletries, jewelry and many other crafts, all produced by individuals with developmental disabilities.
Partnering with local artists and artisan instructors, individuals with severe and profound disabilities enjoy full participation in the production of market-ready items that are highly valued by local patrons who frequently request special orders. To achieve maximum quality of our products, Special Education teachers combine their skills with the artisans in mentoring and instructing during the design and production of these unique products. Additional technical assistance is provided by an engineer for products that have complex production issues.
With two outlet stores located conveniently along I-40 resulting in a public response that has sustained us for over 25 years, we have decided to broaden the appeal to a wider customer base by offering the opportunity for on-line ordering and shipping.
